A: We get this question a lot and it is difficult to answer because every recipe is different and every environment is different, some with a lot of humidity, and others with little humidity. The product reacts differently based on all of the factors. The best way to avoid mold is to follow the directions on the product and test it in your environment. Also, make sure your treats are very dry. To test them, break one in the middle. If it snaps and crumbles, it is more likely to be dry than if it bends. Thick treats can be moist in the middle even though they appear dry on the outside. We recommend using a dehydrator or leaving the treats in the oven to continue drying after you turn the oven off. A: This mold inhibitor acts to reduce the possibility of mold forming from moist ingredients. It is impossible to determine how long it will extend shelf life without real world tests using your actual ingredients, packaging and environment. In general, you should strive to use powdered versions of ingredients whenever possible (ie. peanut butter powder vs peanut butter), do not package treats until they are completely dry (as packaging locks out air and locks in moisture which helps mold grow), and keep in a cool, dry environment (ex. some shops may do grooming, keeping a lot of moisture in the air).
